MANAWATU PRINT

Foxtons Historical Printery

Manawatu Print is not just a Museum, it is in fact a working business. But it surely is historical. It was here in 1878 that the Manawatu Herald set up its permanent home and continued to be printed until 1963.

There were not many proprietors of the newspaper and its associated printing business for its first 80 years. The original owners J and G Russell, sold to Ernest Thynne (Foxton's first Mayor) in 1889. In 1906 he sold out to John F Hornblow and his son Robert (Bob) took over in 1937. He sold out to Bill Blundell in the 1950's. In 1963 Bill sold the newspaper business which then had several owners until it ceased production in 1997.

Bill sold the printing business to Harry Robson and John Read in 1967. They traded as Manawatu Print (1967) Ltd, but in 1983 John became the sole owner of the business and building that stetches back over 100 years.
